Hormone balancing smoothie

Hormone balancing smoothie

Why have we called this smoothie hormone balancing? We originally designed it for those that came to our Menopause workshop to highlight some fantastic hormone balancing ingredients. We have shared with you all as it’s also perfect for hormones at any age, not just women going through the peri-menopause. See our tip at the bottom for why these ingredients are perfect for your hormones. And also note the warning about grapefruit if taking some medications.

ingredients

makes 1 large smoothie

2 tablespoons of flaxseed/linseed
4 large stalks of kale
1 grapefruit
1 small banana
400ml coconut milk or 200ml coconut milk and 200ml coconut water

optional extras: superfood powders such as: maca, chlorella or spirulina

method

  • Place the flaxseed/linseeds in a coffee or spice ginder and grind until smooth.

  • Peel the grapefruit and banana and add to a nutribullet or high speed blender.

  • Strip the kale from the stalks and add to the blender.

  • Add the liquid and flaxseed and, if using, any optional powders.

  • Blend until smooth.

the health boost tip

Flaxseeds are packed with fibre and good fats as well as a compound called lignans, which help to balance our hormones.

Grapefruit is so powerful that it interacts with certain medications - so please check your interactions before using.

Coconut is full of healthy fats. Good fats are essential as they are the building blocks for making hormones.

Kale provides us with magnesium as do all dark green leafy vegetables. Magnesium is known as the relaxing mineral as it helps with mood and sleep.

Maca is a root from Peru that helps to balance hormones by stimulating and nourishing the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. It is brilliant for PMS.

Chlorella is a green algae that’s a good source of protein, iron and vitamin C. I like to use it for hormonal clients for its ability to help the liver detox, which can be sluggish with our modern lifestyles.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that has great antioxidant properties.
